Osteopathic Care

How OMM Can Help with Allergies

As a DO, I treat the whole body — not just your symptoms. OMM is hands-on treatment that helps your body drain and heal more effectively. During allergy season, the goal is simple: open drainage and reduce congestion naturally.

🤲
Sinus Drainage Techniques
Gentle pressure and rhythmic movements applied to the facial bones can help open drainage pathways, reducing sinus pressure and congestion faster than medication alone in some patients.
💧
Lymphatic Pump
The thoracic and pedal lymphatic pump techniques help move fluid through your lymphatic system, reducing overall immune burden and improving your body's ability to respond to allergens.
🦴
Suboccipital Release
Tension at the base of the skull affects cranial nerve function and drainage. Releasing this area often provides immediate relief from headache and sinus pressure.

At-Home Care

Things You Can Do Right Now

Between visits, these simple habits can make a real difference in how you feel this season:

🚿
Nasal Rinsing (Neti Pot or Saline Spray)
Rinsing your nasal passages with saline daily — especially after being outdoors — physically clears pollen before it triggers a reaction. Use distilled or boiled water only.
🪟
Keep Windows Closed on High-Pollen Days
Check your local pollen count (apps like Pollen.com or WeatherBug are great). On high days, keep windows closed in the morning when counts peak, and run your AC instead.
👆
Self-Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Using gentle, light strokes along your neck toward your collarbone for 1–2 minutes can stimulate lymph flow. I'm happy to show you this technique at your next visit.
😴
Elevate Your Head at Night
Sleeping with your head slightly elevated (an extra pillow works) helps prevent mucus from pooling and can reduce morning congestion significantly.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Your Allergy Medicine Guide

The good news: the medications available over the counter for seasonal allergies are safe and effective for most people. Here's a quick guide to what's out there, what to expect, and one important note about Benadryl.

Medication How It Helps Side Effects
Non-Drowsy Antihistamines
Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra
Reduce sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Take daily for best results. Well tolerated. Zyrtec may cause mild drowsiness in some. Safe for daily seasonal use.
Flonase (Fluticasone)
Nasal corticosteroid spray
Reduces nasal inflammation, congestion, and post-nasal drip. Most effective OTC allergy treatment — start early, takes a few days to kick in. Occasional mild nasal irritation or nosebleeds. Aim away from the septum. Extremely safe for daily use.
Azelastine (Astepro)
Antihistamine nasal spray — now OTC
Fast-acting nasal antihistamine. Great for congestion and sneezing. Can be combined with Flonase for stronger relief. Bitter taste after spraying (breathe through mouth briefly). Mild nasal burning possible. Safe for regular use.
Antihistamine + Flonase
Combination approach
Best option for moderate-to-severe symptoms. Safe to use together — they work differently and complement each other well. No added concerns. Reach out if you'd like help choosing the right combo for your symptoms.
⚠️
Afrin (Oxymetazoline) — 3 Days Maximum
Afrin works fast, but using it beyond 3 days causes rebound congestion — your nasal passages become dependent on it and congestion returns worse than before. Use it for short-term relief only (a bad day, a flight). For ongoing congestion, Flonase and azelastine are the right choice.
⚠️
Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) — Not for Daily Use
Benadryl is fine occasionally, but avoid taking it every day. It causes sedation, impairs cognition, and long-term regular use has been linked to increased dementia risk. For daily allergy control, stick with the non-drowsy options above.
